Plastic bags are among the 12 items of debris most often found in coastal cleanups, according to the nonprofit Center for Marine Conservation. The bags don’t biodegrade, they photodegradeable ”breaking down into smaller and smaller toxic bits contaminating soil and waterways and entering the food web when animals accidentally ingest.   Plastic bag litter in the marine environment is often mistaken for food such as jellyfish. Hundreds of thousands of sea turtles, whales and other marine mammals die every year from eating discarded plastic bags mistaken for food.  Plastic in an animal’s gut can prevent food digestion and can lead to a very slow and painful death. Once an animal decomposes the plastic is then freed back into the marine environment to carry on killing other wildlife.

  1. [...] Don’t say YES to a plastic bag, (there are heaps of  cool reuseable bags out there so make the effort to remember to take one with you.) [...]
