Wash and wear: 16 tips to lighten laundry day

With this system in place, you can take care of your clothing with a minimum of time and fuss for just pennies a day.

1. Buy clothes that are low maintenance. Translation: Does not require dry cleaning.

For dry-clean-only garments that you may already own or must acquire, save time and money by dry cleaning your garments in your home dryer with a convenient do-it-yourself product such as, Dryel®.

2. Create an area in your closet for soiled clothes by category, with baskets for colors, lingerie, whites, etc. If you use a laundromat, keep a zippered pouch of quarters with your laundry supplies.

3. Purchase dye- and fragrance-free laundry products — a healthier choice.  Many scented dryer sheets contain artificial fragrances that coat your clothes with toxic substances that are absorbed through the skin.

4. Always wash in cold water, especially if there are any stains in the load.  Pre-treating with a little liquid detergent or one of the many spot cleaners will help to lift the stain.

5. If the load contains any exercise wear or for some other reason may be particularly malodorous, add ¼ cup of white vinegar to the water.  Vinegar also adds softness, too.

6. Keep a mesh zippered bag in your lingerie basket for washing your unmentionables in the washer on a gentle cycle.  These can be hung to air-dry from plastic hangars on your shower rod.

7. If you have more than one child, buy multiples of these mesh bags if you want to wash and dry each child’s socks and underwear together to prevent having to sort afterward.

8. Clean the lint trap in your dryer before each load. Your dryer will be more efficient and use less energy. Failure to keep the lint trap clean can also be a fire hazard.

9. Shake each wet garment out before placing it into the dryer to reduce wrinkles.  Once the drying cycle is complete, remove, fold, or hang the clothes immediately so that wrinkles do not set in.

10. Do not place anything in the dryer if you are concerned about shrinkage.  Place on a plastic hangar on your shower rod to dry.

11. If you have several loads, schedule them for the same session so that you can take advantage of a pre-heated dryer.

12. If you are drying a large load, consider splitting it into two dryer cycles so that the heavier items, such as towels, can dry last when the dryer is hottest.

13. Keep a sewing kit with a few needles with white, black, and camel thread ready to go in your laundry cabinet. Having this on hand will save time when you come across a loose button or torn garment.

14. Collect whites with permanent stains for a full load. Fill the washer with cold water.  Add enough laundry detergent for one load, a little less than a cup each of Cascade® (must be this brand, I’ve tried others to no avail) automatic dishwasher detergent, and bleach.

Set the machine to agitate a bit with this mixture and then let the clothes soak for at least two hours.  Set the washer on warm rinse and add an extra rinse cycle.

15. Cashmere sweaters and garments should never be dry cleaned.  Instead, wash them by hand in tepid water with a gentle liquid soap such as Woolite.® Rinse in clear water and roll the garments into a clean towel, stepping lightly on the roll to squeeze out excess moisture. Carefully drape over a wood drying rack in your tub.

16. For a special treat that your kids will remember their entire lives, wrap them up in deliciously warm sheets and towels, fresh from the dryer just before folding the linens.  It’s the little things like this that create joy free of charge.
