Disposing of Paint

green | July 9th, 2010 - 8:15 PM

Now your paint project is over, dispose of excess paint wisely. Don’t pour it down the drain as this leads to pollution of our waterways and threatens the survival of aquatic plants and animals.

Oil-based paint (and the container it is stored in) is considered a hazardous substance. To dispose of it responsibly, contact your local council for the next date and collection point for hazardous materials.

Try the following eco-friendly ways to solve the problem of what to do with any leftover acrylic paint.

  • Store it in the can to use for touch-ups.
  • Give it to a neighbour or colleague, or donate it to a charity or community group.
  • Line a container with newspaper and fill it with biodegradable cat litter. Pour small quantities of any unwanted paint directly over the litter. Wait for the litter to absorb the paint, then wrap up the cat litter and toss it into your household bin.
