The Great American Backyard Campout June 26 2010

Spooky stories, campfire songs, stargazing, s’mores — is there a reason not to love camping? (Well, except for the poison ivy and long road trip to get there.) With The Great American Backyard Campout tomorrow, Saturday, June 26th, you don’t have to drive anywhere or do deep-woods hiking to enjoy these pleasures; the idea is to camp out in the comfort of your backyard, neighborhood park, or (if you’re a city dweller) your balcony.

If you camp out back this weekend, you and your kids will be joining thousands of others across the nation for the sixth annual Campout. You can also register your camp and raise funds for the National Wildlife Federation while you’re at it. Here’s what else we dig about pitchin’ tents:

- Catching fireflies equals instant family bonding.
- Recent studies have shown that playing outside improves kids’ eyesight.
- The new generation of “indoor children” is suffering from Vitamin D deficiency, and an abundant source is sunlight!
- Studies show that outdoorsy kids are more creative.
- You can use camping to help teach your kids the importance of preserving the environment.
- It’s just plain fun. Visit The National Wildlife Federation website for activities, songs, and recipes to add creativity to your campout. Then grab your sleeping bag and tent (or teepee — we found some cute ones!) for some family fun under the stars.
