Eco benefits of reading catalogues online

It’s no secret that businesses these days need to be increasingly aware of their environmental impact. Being ‘green’ needs to cover all aspects of operations, extending from the office to suppliers to marketing activity and beyond.

The distribution of printed catalogues, more commonly referred to as junk mail, is one marketing practice that is a huge drain on the environment. After 20 years working in the marketing industry and as a passionate greenie, I started Cataloguecentral.com.au in 2006 to provide an alternative to wasteful junk mail – an online destination for catalogues. I am very pleased to announce that ECOVOICE will also be distributing Catalogue Central catalogues right from this site.

Catalogues are a staple of retail marketing. Retailers have communicated their products, sales and specials through catalogues for years. And as most of know, people generally love catalogues, but the environmental wastage is a real concern.

Figures on catalogues impact on the environment are scary:

  • There are around 8 billion catalogues delivered around Australia each year. Junk mail makes up 6% of all paper used in Australia, equating to 240,000 tonnes of paper per year.
  • One tonne of catalogue pages uses 90,000 litres of water to produce. We could fill 8,640 Olympic swimming pools with the water used to produce a year’s worth of catalogues.

You’ve probably noticed catalogues clogging your letter box, and the fact is that each household in Australia receives 1,260 catalogues a year. This breaks down to 24 catalogues per week. Last week I received a grand total of 49 catalogues at my home. Not only would I never have the time to read them all, there’s no possible way that I could be interested in all these products. In fact, only 20% of deliver catalogues are ever read, leaving 192,000 tonnes of paper completely wasted each year.

It’s annoying for people who receive unwanted catalogues, and it’s a waste for retailers who aren’t reaching their customer. Printed catalogues are simply no longer as relevant as they used to be.

When it comes to shopping, people have a choice about what information they receive and look at online, while junk mail delivery only allows an ‘all or nothing’ approach. Catalogue Central offers an online alternative to print catalogues and means people don’t miss out on the latest specials from their favourite stores.

Reading catalogues online is easy and convenient. You can select which catalogues you want to look at, search for particular products, browse for your local retailers and do it all whenever is a convenient time for you. You know you’re getting the latest information and won’t be filling up your recycling bin with unread waste paper.

I started Catalogue Central to reduce the impact of all the paper used (and wasted) on junk mail. All of our catalogues are 100% carbon neutral as well. In a commercial sense, it also gives retailers a cost effective way to communicate and would deliver a strong return on their investment. For consumers they now have a convenient environmentally friendly choice. It really is a win-win situation.

And now you can also get the catalogues of your choice from Eco Voice it’s even easier. Click here now to see for yourself.

Saying no to junk mail is just another way you can be green around your home.
