The City of Melbourne provides, empties and maintains:

  • 2750 public street litter bins throughout the municipality, many of which have butt-out plates forCigarette butts incorporated into their design
  • more than 100 public place recycling bins within the streets of the CBD and Southbank
  • more than 150 public place recycling bins in the city’s parks and gardens
  • 253 cigarette butt bins in the CBD, Docklands and in city parks

Recycling bins are located where people are most likely to buy and consume drinks, such as near food outlets in Bourke Street, Swanston Street and Southbank.

They are easily recognisable by the distinctive yellow recycling symbol painted onto a blue background, stainless steel tops and signage. Each recycling bin is situated next to a litter bin, to allow for simple and convenient disposal of drinks containers.

What to put in public place recycling bins:

  • glass
  • rigid plastic containers (such as drink bottles and takeaway containers)
  • aluminium and steel cans
  • small amounts of clean paper and cardboard
  • please remember to remove plastic caps and lids before placing them in the recycling bin

What not to put into public place recycling bins:

  • polystyrene foam cups (including Boost Juice containers)
  • waxed paper drink cups (including McDonalds milkshake containers)
  • paper that is soiled by food remnants
  • plastic bags
  • large amounts of cardboard that jam up the bins
  • drinking straws
  • food scraps

Measuring effectiveness of recycling

The City of Melbourne regularly monitors the effectiveness of public place recycling. The rates of public place recycling are very good but soiled paper, waxed paper cups and polystyrene foam are still found in the recycling bins and cannot be recycled. Please remember to put these types of waste in the litter bin.
