Eltham North Primary School commenced their Sustainable Schools Journey over six years ago.

This year, Eltham North Primary School’s school motto ‘Growing, Discovering, Creating Together” has been integrated into their Sustainable Schools program – creating a holistic approach that encompasses the four components: Biodiversity, Water, Waste and Energy.Students engage in a diverse range of learning experiences to develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours to make informed decisions about their impact on the environment.

Eltham North Primary School has banned commercially bottled water in what is believed to be a Victorian first.

Pupils at Eltham North Primary School are being told to drink tap water and use only environmentally friendly re-useable containers.

We have good water in Melbourne,” said Principal David Foley.

“It’s a waste of money buying plastic bottled water and most of the bottles end up in our waterways or in landfill. “

But Mr Foley said his school had been moving towards the policy since installing waste-cutting water fountains last year.

A bottled water ban was introduced in the NSW town of Bundanoon last month.

Mr Lynch said it was crazy that people were buying so much bottled water during the economic crisis.

“A lot of those bottles can’t be recycled and end up as landfill, it’s a no-win situation,” he said.

Other green events at the school include an Eltham North Primary Nude Food Day where everyone was asked to bring lunches to school without any wrapping  A group of students went to every classroom and measured how full the compost, recycle and rubbish bins were. We tallied up how many children brought no rubbish and how many there were in each class. When we compared them to the next day we realised that some classes had less rubbish and some had more.

Eltham North Primary School also has a  Growing Club which continues to make an impression in the garden – weeding and transplanting plants.

They are now preparing an area the ‘Greenhouse’ for their Arbour Week project. After the path is completed, students will plant and create signage for a variety of local plants.

The purpose of this project is to learn about factors affecting survival in our local environment.

Great Work Eltham North Primary School!
