And now for those Plastic Produce Bags

Many of us have now made the change to reusable shopping bags and diligently take them with us shopping and to the supermarket.  Now it’s time to consider the options for those plastic produce bags.

Most of the time you don’t even need a bag at all. Who cares if your bananas touch the peppers? it’s a little more difficult when it comes to smaller items, particularly if you need a lot – think string beans and Brussels sprouts. But for most fruits and vegetables you buy, you can do without it. Just put them right in your cart. After all, you are going to wash them when you get home anyway. Go bagless when you can!

IMG_0465On my weekly Sunday morning trip to the  Mulgrave Farmers market I spotted the a fruit & vegie sack named Greensacks- a machine washable bag to replace the single use plastic option. The idea for the development of greensacks came from their desire to reduce the use of plastic bags and other non-recyclable packaging in the community.

The product itself is not is not truly green (100% polyester), like most of the green checkout shopping bags available on the market. The choice of  fabric came down to polyester/affordable/reaching more people or renewable/expensive/less people.

They can not categorically say how long Greensacks’ fruit & vegie sacks will last because they have no history but  they have done everything to create a product which will be long lasting and reusable. If the care instructions are followed (no sharp objects) then there is no reason why the sacks won’t keep on keeping on. If by chance they do get snagged on something sharp and get a hole, the beauty of the net fabric is that it won’t run and cause a bigger hole. The sacks can still be used as normal.

The sacks are not the ‘perfect GREEN’ solution but it’s better than the current alternative.  Green Trash Can has purchased some and immediately put them to good use.
