Give an Eco-friendly Gift.

Buy something that you’ll be happy to give.

Have you ever looked at the list for wedding presents and wondered how ‘green’ these suggestions are. Many of us have been there: that occasion where we labor over pages of wishes and try to find something that the couple will actually use and not shove in a cupboard after they realize they didn’t really need it.

We have no control of what is on the list but we can certainly choose how we spend our money.  Look for something useful and sustainable.

We need to remind ourselves that we do have choices every time we make a purchase and that you are pleased with gift chosen.  There is no rule of gift giving that says you have to buy off the list.  They are suggestions only.

Look for items such as organic cotton towels or linen, bamboo items or if an electric product is given, check energy ratings etc. Just be sure that your gift is useful as well as “green”

Other ideas to keep your gift greener:

  • Consider a reusable bag instead of wrapping paper.
  • Simply wrap things (like towels) in themselves.
  • Scraps of fabric lying around after crafty endeavors? Wrap the gift in it!
  • A bamboo kitchen towel or two would even do the trick for any gift. For bigger gifts, a table cloth will cover it!
  • Use biodegradable raffia instead of ribbon or reuse ribbons you’ve salvaged.
  • Use a photo or image from a card you received to make a gift tag.
  • Skip the bow and use a pretty flower from your garden instead.  Even twigs, berries or pinecones make great toppers with simple brown craft paper for the wrap.

It is about choice so make your gift ‘green’.

Thanks to Doreen for giving us this suggestion on the Mom Goes Green website.  Check out there other great ideas.
