Rewards for Recycling Scheme.

recyclingVeolia American company RecycleBank is in talks to introduce its recycling incentive scheme in “a number of London boroughs” following the successful roll-out of its first UK trial in the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead to award residents points based on how much of their waste is recycled.

The news came as Windsor and Maidenhead reported that half of the 2,800 residents eligible to use its scheme, a green waste collection, had signed up in its first six weeks of operation – and that there had been a notable rise in green waste tonnages.

The administration of the scheme requires the wheelie bins of those residents involved to be fitted with a chip that identifies the bin as belonging to a particular house. The points can then be redeemed for money-off vouchers for products and services, or used to make a donation to charity on the residents’ behalf.

A spokesman for RecycleBank explained that the reward partners, such as Marks & Spencer, fund the points – which give residents money off vouchers towards a variety of products as part of their corporate social responsibility programmes. He added that the vouchers are also a way of increasing the number of customers visiting stores.

There is a cap to prevent abuse of the scheme by residents trying to generate extra recycling to cash in on the points. Dedicated recyclers can expect to earn vouchers worth £40 per year.

Similar schemes are in operation in 18 US states and have led to marked improvements in recycling rates in some areas. Check out Recyclebank website to see how the process works, if your community is involved or request to your community that they should be.
